Vacuum advance is most likely what you have, so stick with that (if that is what is in it).
Mechanical advances are used for engines with little or no vacuum (as in big cam engines).
There is the chance it has a 1966 distributor mounted to a 71 engine, if it has points this is what has happened. So it may be that you only need points. What kind of distributor do i need for my vw bug?I've had best results with the single vacuum advance units. Full mechanical makes less power, except in extreme conditions like pro racing. Any of the stock units will work just fine, they don't know what year car they are in. Even the dual vacuum is good, but that was used for emissions controls.
So stay away from the 009

I say to definitely go with the Bosch 009. I have a 69, and 73 Beetle and a 72 Karmann Ghia and they all have the 009. The points on these cars can and will go out at the most inappropriate times. A lot of vintage VW owners who still use the point distributors always, or should, carry an extra set of points. Do yourself a favor and go electronic. I have had no problems and you get a better combustion with these.
