VWs have sealed transmissions.
Most standard owners do not have the ability to check the transmission oil levels themselves.
However if you are experienced. Raise vehicle so that it is level.
Warm up the transmission by running the car for a few minutes.
There is a sealed plug at the top of the transmission that needs to be removed. If you do it properly, you won't damage the plug, but it doesn't hurt to have a spare in case you do.
Fluid should come out of the plug hole. If no fluid comes out, fill with proper VW transmission fluid until oil comes out of the hole.
Replace plug.
The honest truth is they are a REAL PAIN to get to. Especially since they are suppose to be tested when the tranmission is warm. Typically it's cheaper, and less hassle to take it to a dealership. (My opinion). How do I check my transmission oil in my 1999 VW Passat?is the passat a manual trans or automatic trans. if it's a manual there is a plug on the side of the trans that looks like a big allen wrench fits in there. it's a 17mm allen wrench. you take out the plug and stick your finger in the hole and see if you have fluid in it. the level should be up to the hole. if you don't have any oil on your finger then fill it with that same hole until it comes out. Automatic i think there is a dipstick but i'm not 100% sure. good luckHow do I check my transmission oil in my 1999 VW Passat?Open the hood, pull out the dipstick, check the oil level.
