How do I get to the brake light switch on my 2004 VW Passat?

I know its located behind the pedal, but I cant find it. Should I remove the plastic covering under there? I do not have an owners manual.How do I get to the brake light switch on my 2004 VW Passat?are you sure its not on the pedal?
