What is causing a P0715 code in my clk automitic vw tranny?

1996 vw jetta witha clk automatic trans is not using any gear but third in drive. Can manually shift 1st 2nd and 3rd but no 4th. code is p0715 , input turbine sensor A cirtuit malfunction. what sensor is this? What is causing a P0715 code in my clk automitic vw tranny? This is slightly out of my expertise, but I believe this is a speed sensor in the front of the automatic, at the first wet clutch pack. While it could be a bad sensor or wire harness to the sensor, the fact it is also shifting so badly might indicate the sensor is working but the clutch is simply slipping.

It could be worn out and need to be replaced. A slipping wet clutch pack will quickly cook the ATF, so look and smell the ATF. If you have a dipstick, this is easy. Either way, I would guess dropping the transmission pan would be in order. You will probably be able to tell if the clutch is leaving residue in the pan then. You may also be able to see the sensor and wire harness. It seems to me that there is also likely a clutch control valve that could be bad. But I don't have good enough images in the Bentley manual. You may need a specialized CD that shows more details. While you may be able to do something, I would guess it is also quite likely the tranny needs a rebuild.
