The new Beetle is built in Mexico while the Golf is imported from Germany. The Beetles are as reliable as any VW, but they have to have all the required maintenance done to them, and have good service records if bought used,or repairs can get costly! The Beetles are a bit harder to work on than the Golf or Jetta, they hide stuff! As far as the TDI diesels go, they get 45 mpg, go like stink and very reliable with the required maintenance, a few hundred thou on them is no problem! I would recommend the 5 speed over the automatic, better mpg and not as expensive to fixIs the modern version of the vw beetle a reliable car?My wife and I drove a New Beetle for many years. The only part we replaced [at abt. 90,000 miles ] was a water pump. This was performed at the dealership for a fair price.

Our New Beetle never let us down. We drove it up and down the East Coast on many a memorable vacation! What a wonderful car!

The only reason we sold it was because we needed a larger trunk and a 4 door. The Beetle impressed us so much that we bought a 05 VW Jetta.

The Jetta now has 80,0000 super-reliable miles on it.

Perhaps other owners have had problems, but our time with the Beetle has been a pleasurable experience.

Also, I know 4 other New Beetle owners. One has a convertible. They all love their cars and have told me they have had no problems .
Mine has been a nightmare and so has my neighbors. The plastic parts break very easily. The "check engine" light will come on and on and on. The airbag light will come on and it will cost $500 to fix. VWs are not very reliable right now. They were great twenty years ago but they have gone down hill quickly. The car falls apart within weeks of buying it.
