Whatever you do, Don't lose that key!!

You have to go to the dealer for a spare, and it will set you back about $350 bucks.

Ummm.. yeah. Its expensive to have your ignition and door locks replaced. Just ask your dealer to give you spares. They will have to order it, but they can.I purchased a VW today and it didn't come with a spare key, How do I replace locks and keys? Is it expensive? If the key has a microchip in it, your best bet is to contact a VW dealer for the key. If no microchip, any locksmith can look up the code to create the missing key, but the dealer may be about the same price. Bottom line call a dealer and ask this question.
Ouch! VW keys are one of the most expensive ones you can get if they have that "folding key" thing. Kind of like a funky switch-blade. They can run about $90. You should go back to the dealership and try to get them to comp you a key. If it was a used vehicle though they usually won't. They give you the keys they were given.

Good luck to you!I purchased a VW today and it didn't come with a spare key, How do I replace locks and keys? Is it expensive? You dont replace locks and keys, go to a VW dealer he will make note of the vehicles registration number and the VIN number and from those will be able to supply you with a new key - warning, if the car is under 10 years old it will be a chipped key and EXPENSIVE. If you can do without the remote facility just buy a Transponder key which is a fair bit cheaper, but you will have the heavy task of putting the key in the lock and turning it. lolI purchased a VW today and it didn't come with a spare key, How do I replace locks and keys? what model of vw is it. thanks for additional info, l think your be looking at a chipped key for that model, so l'd just change the door locks and leave the ignition side alone. otherwise your be paying out to have your new kew chipped to the e c u of the vehicle, contact the garage who you purchased the vehicle off and enquire about any spare keys,
Was it a former Motability car? Or hire, or contract lease? If so you're like me, but i was told there are thousands of spare keys at a central office in Swansea. Once they cross reference with the DVLA they send the key/s to the last known dealer, who contacts you. It might take a month, or two years, but don't worry. The dealer is liable for any theft because the car was knowingly sold insecure.I purchased a VW today and it didn't come with a spare key, How do I replace locks and keys? Is it expensive?
Depending on the model of the car it can be very expensive and difficult or very easy and cheap to replace all the locks.

For example a mark 3 VW golf will set you back around 拢50 for a complete set of locks with two keys, this includes both the front doors, glove compartment, boot and igntion locks.

However if you need to do the same on two year old golf the price shoots up to 拢175 plus you need to get the car re-programed at a VW agent.

Ja.
Most European sold cars have much more sopisticated locking systems than US sold. This is because of weights and measurements treaty adopted that also affects measurements. Simply put good locks cost more than not so good locks. In the US we did not require sophisticated auto locks until forced to by the treaty. Anyway that in mind most likely your vehical uses an enhanced security system, usally signified by a idiot light saying security and requiring electronic keys. It is always cheaper to acquire additional keys than it is to replace/change locks because changing locks is more labor intensive. However you generally will find locksmiths less expensive to accomplish this end as they rebuild and reuse the existing hardware. Generally dealerships replace so you have a higher cost for materials. As well you do not have to change all the locks you could use two keys and just change the ignition. Generally there is not much to worry about if the car was obtained from a dealer/sales lot. If it was a high end car and purchased after a repossion or from an indavigual I would be more concered. Some times crooks will sell a vehical over and over by stealing it back with a spare key they have kept secretly.
