TDI is diesel engine that is much much more fuel efficient. THANKS.How come some people drive regular VW Golf where they could purchase VW Golf TDI instead and save tons on gas?Well, there are a few factors
-price (i know that in canada, the city golf is 14,000$, and i don't even think we have a golf tdi)
-price of diesel (some people see diesel as more expensive so they go for the gas engine, not really thinking)
- availability of diesel (it can be hard at times to find diesel gas in certain places, or so i've heard)
-some people believe that diesel engines are noisier and louder than their gasoline counterpart, but this was true with old engines, since the newer ones are comparable to gasoline engines.
It all comes down to personal preference as well. How come some people drive regular VW Golf where they could purchase VW Golf TDI instead and save tons on gas?
As someone who just traded in their beetle TDI for a beetle with a gas engine I can tell you why I did it based on my experience. My mileage wasn't that great. I would get about 450km per 55L tank, not the 1000km as promised. But, I do a lot of city driving and barely any highway driving that may make a difference.
Also a lot of people do not realise that the price of diesel is more costly than gas, where I live (Vancouver, Canada) it's $1.55 a litre whereas gas is $1.32 a litre and far easier to find, I no longer have to drive 15 minutes to fill up with diesel or 25 minutes for biodiesel. Oil changes will also now be less expensive as I no longer need to use synthetic oil, I also no longer need to change my glow plugs which was spendy as well.
Also, TDIs are more costly to buy but their value holds up very well. My 2003 tdi beetle was selling at the dealership for $19K which isn't much less than what I paid for it in 2004 not sure what it sold for though.
Hope that helps answer your question, I know it's not a Golf but it's a VW nonetheless. How come some people drive regular VW Golf where they could purchase VW Golf TDI instead and save tons on gas? Many Americans still do not like the idea of diesel fuel. Add into the equasion that diesel fuel does cost more, and the numbers balance out some. Sadly, most of it is simple marketing and the idea that Americans are spoiled on the stoplight to stoplight of gas power over diesel (which can be a farce since I know some diesels now which will take the gas engine in that race). Now if we can only get some of the new diesels set up as hybrids, and we will really save on fuel then.
Hello
There is a few of ways to save on gas, there is systems that you can easily develop by yourself and install them in your car to save 40% ~ 70% (water 4 gas), also you can save on gas changing a few little details on your driving.
I'm sure you will find this information useful!
Enjoy,
DanielHow come some people drive regular VW Golf where they could purchase VW Golf TDI instead and save tons on gas? Some factors:
-Not all states will allow TDi's to be sold- emissions regulations
-US has yet to realize that Diesels are phenomenal in terms of economy and performance. For what its worth, I would love to have an Audi A4 TDi quattro to replace my 2.8 V6
-GM destroyed the US perception of Diesel in the early 80's when they took a gasoline engine and converted it to Diesel- major problems. How come some people drive regular VW Golf where they could purchase VW Golf TDI instead and save tons on gas?
Diesel is getting more expensive over here in the UK, because everyone had the same idea - get a diesel car for better millage.
There is more demand for it now, and so it's more expensive.
The same WILL happen in the US pretty soon - within the next year.
And not everyone likes diesel, every TRUE car fan hates the stuff.
S"cuse? I got a VW TD Get 45 mpg. My "gas" car gets 45 mpg. Gas is cheaper than diesel.
My last diesel, pump blew = $1500 for a temp. rebuild. NOT likely. Finding diesel is a pain in a strange town when you R on MT. Forget the city. There are negatives
My older diesel VW rabbit non turbo(yes it clatters but thats okay - diesels are suppose to) got 74 MPG best 62 average city/hwy. Did it do highway speeds - yes, of course and I pulled a trailer. (so I am not racing from stop light to stop light). BORING.How come some people drive regular VW Golf where they could purchase VW Golf TDI instead and save tons on gas?
In Europe:
1. Diesel cars are more expensive to buy
2. They are taxed more
3. Diesel fuel is more expensive
Thus:
You want a diesel if you can still have a profit besides points 1,2 and 3 = you drive several thousand miles/year. Most people don't.
Sounds good until you are in a strange town (traveling) and you can't find any diesel stations, while there are tons of gas stations.

Also until recently diesel engines burned dirty.
Good Luck...
I would prefer the TDI but they are harder to find and more expensive.
