I have a vw bug with a 1600cc dual port, need to make it go faster, already know lots of ways to do it but need more, im a young motorhead mechanic so if less budget means more mechanic work i can do it, Wanna atleast keep it under 1500$ meaning no new parts just used lol, anyone got any ideas they can share with me?Building a fast vw bug engine on a low budget?A tune-up is the cheapest (will not make the engine more powerful - but will ensure that it runs optimally)
Free flow type exhaust system possibly first thing to look at (better breathing)
Is it a single carburettor engine - if so twin carbs is an option
You can also look at turbo/superchargers - not for the faint hearted when you talk about a beetle air-cooled motor
If we are taking the head off - this can be polished and ported (better breathing).
While we are about this, you may look at fitting a modified camshaft.
Maybe lighten the flywheel.
And so we can carry on until the cheque book runs dry.
You just need to browse the internet to find a host of performance equipment for the Beetle.
Incidentally - fitting wider tyres decreases performance (more rubber on road - greater frictional resistance).
Fitting smaller diameter tyres improves acceleration, whilst larger tyres increases top speed (but reduce acceleration). However this is not making the engine go faster.
There are three factors to modding an engine.
-cheap, -reliable, -performance
You can only choose 2 out of the 3
You will never be able to cheaply mod an engine and achieve both reliability and performance.
A cheaply modded engine may be able to perform, but it will not be reliable. On the other hand, an engine may be modded cheaply and be reliable, but it will lack performance.Building a fast vw bug engine on a low budget?
the way i did it on my 1973 bug was i went to a junk yard found a supercharged thunder bird took off the super charger and cut the inlet side flush ware it would not inter fear with the supercharger i then went to lowbudget.com ware they sell kits for turbo bugs and bought there turbo carb adpter and jbwelded it on to the intake of the super charger mounted my 4 barel carb with vacume sendaries on top of that hoked the oil lines up to the super charger and made a manifold ware it hooked in to the intake manifold on the bug then attached the belt attached the gas line then started and tuned the carb when i was done i made about 100 hp you can go on you tube to see ware i got my idea from just look up supercharged vw bug.Building a fast vw bug engine on a low budget?i had a dunebuggy with the same engine i cut the intake manifold (you know the two pipes that run to the engine block lol) and the two parts of the manifold that the new carb and the old carb will set on...this gives you two single barrel carbs the only thing is...it takes a while to get them to sync right....then i put a used mild crank in it that boosted the horsepower better than anything .....you have to get a better head gaske when you get the new cam ...the cam new is only 60$ i cant remember what it was but wow it was worth the money...and i had to have a better clutch disk ....it just couldnt take it....p.s. i love vw engines the easiest to work on in my opinion and some powerful ones at that since they have and amazingly long stroke that have a tone of torque and lugging power...good luckBuilding a fast vw bug engine on a low budget?
junkyard turbo build time. definitely go to the samba. and if you really plan to stick to that budget then learning about oem upgrades that you can scavenge will get you the furthest. but even still it wont be fast for that little amount of cash.Building a fast vw bug engine on a low budget? If you've got time, head over to thesamba. The forums have more info than you will ever need.Building a fast vw bug engine on a low budget?
