I just pulled off the shifter and I can't tell what once held the two peices together?1965 VW Bug: What holds the the ball on the end of the shifter to the connecting peice below it?it should have a plastic sleeve in it with a tread.
you can get a new sleeve at most auto shops...
the sleeve goes into the gear knob and then it screws onto the gear stick.1965 VW Bug: What holds the the ball on the end of the shifter to the connecting peice below it?There should be threads on the shifter and more on the inside of the ball. Maybe,,just maybe it was held on by a gasket on the inside of the ball.1965 VW Bug: What holds the the ball on the end of the shifter to the connecting peice below it?65 VW?. The shift rod in the body is held in place by a replaceable plastic bushing. The two bolts that hold the shift handle down locate the shift handle in the shifter rod. No bushing between shift handle and shift rod. A blob of grease in shift rod socket will cut down on shifter rattle. The two bolts holding handle and reverse lock out plate are used to adjust front to rear travel of shifter. The lock out plate will fit in more than one way and will be a problem if you didn't notice which way it came out.
