What are my options and what should be done about it?
I'll give best answer to whoever explains to me what I need to do.Why does my 1999 VW Golf grind when I try to put it in 2nd gear?Either your shifter linkage is not adjusted correctly, causing the gear to not fully engage (a simple and sheap adjustment), or you have worn out your thrust washers inside the gearbox (since helical gears are quieter than straight-cut, that's what most manufacturers use these days. However, they also cause a lot of sideways forces on the gears, and if the washers are worn out, it will pop the gear into neutral - usually when you take your foot off the gas.) I've had this problem myself. It's a pain in the butt having to hold the shifter to keep it in gear. Unfortunately, this will require a full strip-down and rebuild of the transmission.
Good luck!
PS: I doubt it's your clutch - that could cause the grind, but doesn't explain it popping out of gear. In fact, it would make it hard to shift into neutral, even if you want to. Worn synchro wouldn't usually make it pop out of gear, either. Why does my 1999 VW Golf grind when I try to put it in 2nd gear?look at your clutch plate
