Why did my VW Jetta drop a lot of coolant?

My 2000 VW Jetta (2.0L, automatic trans) dropped a lot of coolant once but hasn't since. I have refilled the reservoir and it hasn't done it since but i see that it's steams every once in a while. I can't find any leaks. What should I do? Is there a way to get a kit that replaces all the coolant hoses? Why did my VW Jetta drop a lot of coolant? If the level is going down and you don't see coolant on the ground then it's likely a head gasket. See if you can smell exhaust in the radiator. I understand you can buy a kit that sniffs exhaust in the radiator if your nose can't detect it. Check your spark plugs and see if one is significantly differrent (cleaner) than the others. If the steam is coming from the exhaust then, yes it's a head gasket. Why did my VW Jetta drop a lot of coolant? Before you go further have a look underneath the water pump, possibly the drops coming through the pump, dropping on the engine and straightaway evaporate. Check all the hose pipes, sometime with pressure building up you can find a leak somewhere, in cold engine it is difficult to find. Look through, with patience you will find the fault. Make sure underneath the radiator it is dry, the mats inside the car are dry, no spillage anywhere and keep a record the places you checked.
