I have been searching on craigslist and I cannot tell difference between them. I see rabbits have the option of being convertibles or not. Is that all the difference? What's the difference between a Vw Rabbit and a Vw cabriolet?Your answer is a tad difficult to answer.
in 1979 VW made the VW Rabbit a Hardtop,
and a Convertible. They were named Rabbit, L, LS, Convertible as the model types
in 1983.5 they changed the Rabbit Convertible to VW Cabriolet.
It remained the Cabriolet till 1993 when the A1 (mk1) line was finished production.
Contrary to belief the VW Rabbit Convertible/Cabriolet is built by the Karmann plant as a Convertible from the ground up... It wasn't a "cutdown" rabbit. All Convertibles are made in Gerrnany, and imported in to the US. This is when they where building Rabbits in Westmorland, PA.
There are 3 Distinct styles of Cabriolet/Convertible.
A Carburetor 1.7 engine
A Mechanical Injection system. CIS
A Totally redesigned Electronic Fuel Injected. Digifant
Carb 79-82
CIS 82-89
Digifant 90-93
The 89-93 are also called Clippers as they have ground effect body packages added
