I recently bought a 2000 VW Golf. Sadly, I couldn't find it with a manual transmission and I needed a car so I bought the automatic. I was thinking of tuning it up a bit so I can have a little more power in the engine. I'm not trying to race with it because I don't want to be the guy who blows his automatic transmission trying to race (is it even possible to race with an AT?). Should I perform minor performance upgrades for it, even though its automatic or should I not even entertain the idea?Should I tune a 2000 VW Golf with an automatic transmission? You should save your money up for a new tranny anyway. That vintage automatic can barely handle the stock power from the 2.0L. The 1.8Ts and TDIs destroy them.Should I tune a 2000 VW Golf with an automatic transmission?Just to let you know, my sister has a 2000 Golf with auto trans.
She has over 130,000 super-reliable miles on it.
The only work done to it [besides the normal oil/filter changes, etc] has been a timing belt replacement at abt 90,000 miles. This service is required on most 4 cylinder engines not just VW.
Try to find out if your timing belt has been replaced yet. A simple inspection is all it takes, to see if it is relatively new. If not and it shows signs of wear, I would replace it . Its not that difficult to do. Or have a shop do it for around $200.
If the belt breaks it could cost you $1000s to repair the engine damage.
In my humble opinion, save your $$ for maintenance items; not dubious power gains.
This applies to all cars, not just VW of course.
