Is my VW Vanagon in need of a new starter?

My VW Vanagon cranks very slowly, if at all, even with a big deep cycle battery connected. It will basically only start by rolling down a hill. Should I replace the starter or try something else first? How difficult is it to replace the starter on a 85 manual Vanagon? Is my VW Vanagon in need of a new starter?VW starters crank slow when they are bad, but they ALSO have a seperate bushing that goes into the transmission and the starter shaft goes into the bushing.

If the Bushing is worn it will crank slowly.

Change the bushing first, they`re less than $5, if it doesnt work then replace the starter.

Or just replace the starter, but dont forget to put a new bushing in it!

Heres the how to...

It could be just the solenoid on the starter. Is my VW Vanagon in need of a new starter?have it tested first...but you have to take it off firstIs my VW Vanagon in need of a new starter?
its probably the starter bu t before you go to all the work of changing it do a very thorough inspection of battery cables the entire length both cables both ends where they connectIs my VW Vanagon in need of a new starter?sounds like the starter to me. but u can take it to auto zone and they will test it and tell you exactly what is wrong. it shouldnt be too difficult to replace the starter . maybe and hour of workIs my VW Vanagon in need of a new starter?
are you sure it's not a weak battery. Just guessing, but I would check that first. from what I understand, changing out the starter is not a fun and easy task. this should help:

also, it's my understanding there is a bolt on top of the starter that's difficult to get to.

good luck
