How to open a broken VW Golf glove compartment ?

There are four screws below the glove compartment. Will the compartment come off if I remove the 4 screws? How to open a broken VW Golf glove compartment ?Probably not, if its a very late model Golf/Jetta/Passat.

It has two pegs that push out, one on each side of the door, left and right side of the door that go into the dash assembly.

Now the best bet is to break the glove box handle assembly off; if you remove the glove box handle you'll see two plastic "legs" sticking out into the cavity that the handle sits into. The legs should have a slight curve to them; stick your finger, screwdriver or whatever between the two "j" shaped legs (they nearly touch each other) and if memory serves me right push down towards the floor. This should retract the legs into the door and you should be able to open the glove box door. Now, you'll need to remove the ratchet mechanism from the door, sometimes you can "cheat" by removing only the arm from the door without removing the entire box assembly, sometimes not.

The reason that the door probably broke in the first place is that you've opened the door without actually sitting in frnt of the glove box using two fingers to open it; one on each side of the lock and pulling the handle with equal force on both sides of the handle. Now, I realize this sounds crazy, however, I'm dead serious. The glove box mechanism is over engineered; you have to think like the Germans and do things like the Germans, if you do then you'll nearly elimate all the problems most owners have. I know, I used to teach the owners of new vehicles bought in our dealership how to use items to avoid issues; it worked well, we had less problems than most dealerships with broken items. I spent 25 years on/off in Volkswagen dealership service departments from 1980 to December, 2005.

Hope this helps, a car nut.
