Trial and error. My dad had this same problem on an old Jag that he was restoring. IT took some time, but he finally got it.
You might also try seeing if you can find a repair manual on-line, or in an auto shop for your 74How does a guy find the firing order on the distributer of his 1974 vw karmann ghia?Same as any motor.
Get the #1 cylinder to top dead center (TDC), note which way the rotor turns and where on the distributor it is pointing at TDC, and put the wire from #1 on the distributor terminal that lines up with the rotor terminal. The next terminal the rotor will hit (ie, the next one around in the direction it rotates) is the next one to fire.
Since you know cylinder order, just connect the rest of the wires around the distributor in the cylinder firing order. How does a guy find the firing order on the distributer of his 1974 vw karmann ghia?
To be positive of # 1, remove valve cover on right faceing engine { #1 an # 2 } remove distributor cap, you lay under car let some one turn motor by crank pulley. You watch # 1 exhaust valve open an close, then # 1 intake valve open an close then replace valve cover, continue to turn crank pully clock wise till top dead center on pulley lines up with center of block. rotor button is now pointing to #1. Wire clock wise #1 #4 # 3 #2.
Good luck. Rotor button should be pointed kinna between the carb an fan houseing. # 1 exhaust valve is towards front of car intake valve is more in center.
