I would only add that instead of the carburetor, he must have meant the intake manifold.

Because if you leave the fan on the generator, then you would have to pull the generator back about a full 6 inches, in order to get the fan to clear the shroud, and the intake manifold is in the way.

I would also add that if I can't get the fan off in the shroud, then you can also lift the shroud up.

The thermostat, 2 side screws, generator strap, and hood hinges then have to come off.

But you can lift it high enough to clear the intake manifold.

If you do want to take the manifold off for any reason, there are 2 10mm nuts on each side.

Careful because they have washers, are slightly angled, you would need to reseal the gaskets when you put it back on, and they are easily broken if you over tighten. How do you take off a carberator completly for a 64 vw bug?Back away from from the Bug.How do you take off a carberator completly for a 64 vw bug?Dude, first take the large nut off the generator shaft from behind the shroud by the firewall. Then take the 4-10mm headed bolts off the shroud, un-clamp the strap holding the generator on the oil filler support. Make sure you get the nut and any shims off the generator shaft as you pull it out. I don't remember ever taking the carb off to do this, but if you decide you need to there are just 2 13mm size nuts holding the carb on the intake. Can't you see them? Pretty obvious, I'm wondering if you have the ability to remove the generator if you can't even see 2 nuts in plain view.
