Got a 1969 beetle with twin carbs, sometimes it runs sweet, sometimes it runs on 2 cylinders and sometimes it won't start at all! Want to know how hard it would be to return it to a single carb rather than muck about trying to balance 2 when I don't know what I'm doing. How do I return my Air Cooled VW engine from twin carbs back to single?very simple to do. first get a new manifold that is appropriate for your heads. is there 1 or 2 intakes coming from each carb to the head? if theres only 1 you have most likely a 1500cc or a 1600cc single port 'B' motor. if theres 2 its dual port and you will need to buy a 3 piece dual port manifold and probably want a 34-pict-3 or 4 carb. the best combo dizzy for the 34-3 or 4 is an 009 with vac advance. single port probably a 30-pict-1 or a 30-pict-3How do I return my Air Cooled VW engine from twin carbs back to single?well the best way is to put a new intake manifold for one carb, by a new carb, and then re tune the motor. the only other thing you can do is rebuild both carbs, and then synchronize and tune them, using a vacum gage. it takes someone who knows what they are doing to get twin carbs right, but there are good mechanics out there. How do I return my Air Cooled VW engine from twin carbs back to single? It sounds like an air leak somewhere but I don't think that would make it intermittent.
More likely a slow run/ air bleed jet screw has been over tightened and damaged the seat in the Carb casting.
Balancing the two in this case would be almost impossible as they will always be going in and out of sync.
I had this happen on a Triumph Vittesse once it was a nightmare.
