I was driving my '99 VW beetle today when the plastic reflection/shield under the front end of the car came loose and started to drag. I ripped it off. Does it need to be replaced?
Best answer will get all the points.Do I need to replace the front end plastic shield on my VW Beetle?I always call it an air dam, but VW calls it a stone shield. Basically all it does is keep rocks out of your serpentine belt. I understand why VW put them there, though, because putting a belt on a Beetle is a PAIN! So it's up to you. It's not necessary to the function of the car, but it can save you from a costly belt replacement down the road. Usually it starts falling off when the person who changes your oil doesn't take it off or put it back on properly. The 1/2 turn screws that hold it on aren't too cheap either. If you suspect it could be your "quick lube" place I wouldn't hesitate to bring the problem to them stating that it fell off due to their negligence. I can't even begin to tell you how many new ones we put on various VW's over my period at a dealership.
