I have a 1974 181 VW Thing and I need to change the oil and filter. How do you change the oil in a VW Thing? All older VW engines are similar on the Thing you should have one large oil pan bolt unscrew to let the oil out . In the older engines there is no external oil filter. There is a internal oil screen to remove unbolt the 6 or 7 little bolts that go around the main oil pan bolt under the plate you will see the screen the best way I found to remove is using a flat head screw driver with not to much pressure and kind of prying it out. If it is not too old you can wash it off with carb cleaner and reuse. I suggest always getting a new one and a new gasket and bolts. Then just put the new one back in where the old one was, Make sure you dont torque those little bolts down to o hard they tend to strip easily so be careful. How do you change the oil in a VW Thing?Buy this book: please...http://www.amazon.com/Keep-Volkswagen-Alive-Step-Step/dp/1566913101/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8%26amp;s=books%26amp;qid=1207287336%26amp;sr=8-1How do you change the oil in a VW Thing?Same way as you would in any Type 1.
Locate the strainer assembly on the bottom center of the engine. It's a plate about 4" round with 6 small screws around the perimeter, %26amp; a large one in the center. The large screw is your drain plug. Put a drain pan under it, %26amp; remove it. When the dripping slows, remove the 6 smaller screws, %26amp; lower the strainer assembly. Some more oil will drip, so keep the pan under it.
Wash out the strainer with degreaser, or replace it with a new one. Reinstall it using new gaskets, %26amp; be careful not to overtighten the screws. Replace the drain plug.
Refill the oil with fresh SAE-30 detergent motor oil.
